Message From ABBYY’s AI Expert

Max Vermeir

Senior Director of AI Strategy, ABBYY >

This month, as the festive season approaches, it inspires reflection and renewal, AI and scientific exploration are making big strides.

The AI industry is shifting from just scaling models to focusing on smarter, high-quality data to fuel its next breakthroughs. With generative AI, it's more important than ever for companies to create strong metrics to measure its business impact, which can lead to better decision-making and sustainable growth. At the same time, physicists are rethinking our understanding of space-time. Some recent studies suggest that gravity might not fully match Einstein's century-old predictions, which could change how we view the universe. Both fields are reexamining their basic ideas and welcoming new approaches. As these changes unfold, there's incredible potential for transformation.

Read on to get some impactful news updates from last month—and if I don’t speak to you before, wishing you a warm and joyful festive season!

Top AI News This Month

1. Are Big Models Enough, or Is Smarter Data the Key for AI’s Next Leap?  >

The scaling plateau seen in OpenAI and other major AI companies highlights a shift from simply scaling models to focusing on the quality of data. While larger models have made strides, we're now seeing diminishing returns from adding more tokens or compute power. The real breakthrough will come from expert-curated, high-quality datasets that provide deeper learning and more meaningful insights. As AI evolves, it’s clear that progress depends on refining the data, not just increasing the scale.

2. Cracking the Code: ROI Metrics in the Generative AI Boom  >

Despite worldwide spending on AI surging more than 2x by 2028 to $632 billion, according to research firm IDC, a new study by KPMG reports only 15% of companies have established ROI metrics for gen AI. That’s scary.

Beyond enabling more data-driven decision making, process intelligence can play a crucial role in supporting ROI reporting for gen AI programs by providing detailed insights into how these programs impact business processes and outcomes. This includes metrics like time saved, error reduction and overall process improvement.

    3. Einstein's cosmic enigma meets AI's daily revolution!  >

Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity is like the OG science fiction movie—revolutionary, a bit mind-bending, and still leaving audiences with more questions than answers. Fast forward a century, and it seems the fabric of space and time may be evolving, much like the endless reboots of the Star Wars franchise. Researchers have found that gravitational wells, those invisible cosmic bowls, don’t quite match Einstein’s predictions once we zoom into the past six billion years

What does this mean for us mere earthlings? That his is an exciting time. We're living in an era where we might need to rethink how we perceive gravity, just like we’re rethinking how AI can transform our daily lives..

      AI Before It Was Cool

      fun fact

      Fun Fact

In 1952, computer scientist Christopher Strachey gave the world a delightful glimpse of generative AI with a love letter generator he created on the Ferranti Mark 1. This pioneering program combined romantic phrases into charming and often comical letters—a bit like an early digital elf crafting heartfelt notes. Fast-forward to today, and Strachey’s experiment feels like the precursor to modern generative AI, now busy spreading holiday cheer through custom Christmas greetings and personalized festive messages.
